Benefits of Swimming for Newbs

Everyone loves to jump into a pool on a hot summer's day. Enjoying the cool water on your skin... the instant gratification... the pool floaties... It just feels like the stress of your day melts away. But what about getting active in the pool?

Swimming is one of the best full body workouts you can do. And not only that, but swimming can work wonders for those with joint pain, stress and anxiety, or weigh loss goals.

How do I get started?

Okay, it's safe to assume that you're not Michael Phelps (but, it would be so cool if you were!). So, you'll need to learn the basics*.

Step 1.) Learn to Float

It's imperative that you get this down from a technical and a safety stance. If you're completely new to swimming, seek out a professional at your local swim club, gym, or recreation center. Or, one of our physical therapists/coaches at SwimStrong!

Step 2.) Get a Feel for the Water

Once you're comfortable enough to float and move about: Try to get your bearings. Doggie paddle, do some kicks on your back, just try to stay moving!

Ultimately, do what is best for your body (consideration LP link).

Step 3.) Build Up Your Stamina

Whew! Moving about can get tiring! Take a break when you need a break and make sure to consistently spread your exercise out over a few days. Try a resting plan like taking 1-2 days off in between each swim session to help you recuperate. Then build up to longer, more intense sessions.

Remember: Start off slow and don't over-exert yourself. It's okay to not be amazing technically when you first begin a regimen.

Step 4.) Get Technical!

If you start to live the sport, start to see results and are able to recover and keep up that stamina look into joining a local club or team. (If you don't like commitment they usually offer stroke clinics, as well).

Disclaimer Time

Okay, so, our legal team wants us to make it very clear that you should only take our advice if it's cool with your doctor (see note below). Which is really, really important for anyone starting ANY type of physical activity.

We also want to let you know that it really is important to work with a trainer, coach or other professional to ensure that you stay safe when you work out.

*Disclaimer you shouldn't ignore: Please consult with your doctor or physical therapist before starting any new exercise routines!
